Green Beauty Drugstore Cosmetics

Do you know how many products you use in a day, from toothpaste and shaving cream to fragrances and hair gels? I used to own a variety of cleansers and makeup and fooled myself thinking I used quality beauty items. I assumed since I often bought cosmetics and hair products from high-end salons that I didn’t have to worry about toxic chemicals.

I was wrong.

Like many, I believed if a product was for sale at a drugstore, supermarket or boutique cosmetics counter, it must be safe. And even worse, I didn’t understand that every product I put on my body soaked into my skin and was absorbed into my bloodstream within minutes. I’ve read that women use between 10-20 cosmetic items daily. This is equal to absorbing about five pounds of makeup per year that includes carcinogens, pesticides and hormone disrupters.

How to Shop for Green Beauty Drugstore Cosmetics

What does this mean?

Studies have shown that certain cosmetic ingredients including phthalate plasticizers, parabens and pesticide triclosan are common pollutants to the human body that may enhance allergic reactions and cancer growing properties.

So, do you want to take any chances when you can make a few changes to your beauty, cleansing and product routine?

I started by shopping at health food markets and online boutiques, looking for only vegan and organic products. It did become costly, so I started to research all of the ingredients in these items. It was easier to substitute a whole food item like coconut oil for makeup remover and moisturizer, as well as essential oils instead of perfume. However, sometimes a girl just misses her lipstick, so I used Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database both online and in app form to help find new green and clean beauty products.

What I learned is that while I do love some of the pricier organic brands (see my favorites here), there are some items that can be purchased at the drugstore. Check out our 1.5 minute video above about how to find healthier cosmetics.

Please leave a comment and let us know what is your favorite product and whether or not you have looked for a healthier alternative.

Here are some of my favorite green beauty products for 2016.

  1. My favorite post is Small Steps Toward Better Beauty Habits: Makeup. It’s hard to find makeup that performs well, so thanks for your recommendations.

    • Yes, it is hard to find good makeup – period. And, it took some trial and error when I first started choosing organic and vegan products. I did have a lot of fun with it, though. I also really like some of the curated beauty boxes like Goodebox that send samples of organic/all-natural products monthly.

  2. Thanks for this giveaway!

  3. My favorite post is the Cancer Resources

    • Thanks for the kind words. I did put a lot of heart and soul into the Cancer Resources section. I continually update it, as well.

  6. We love Dr. Bronner’s soaps!

    • Yes. Dr. Bronner’s castille soaps are great. My favorite is the tea tree oil soap that I use for my face and to remove makeup.

  7. I really like and want to try the Easy Recipe: Carrot Cake Muffins.

    • Definitely try the carrot cake muffins. They are super easy and yummy, too. The first time I made them my son and I finished them within a day. Ok, so maybe we should have better willpower but I didn’t feel guilty because they are so wholesome.

I like mascara best. I do think I would enjoy trying natural cosmetics. I probably would switch if it was a good product.

    • Mascara is my favorite product, too. I’ve tried a number of the organic/natural ones. My favorite so far is by Mineral Fusion. You can buy them at Whole Foods and also online.

  11. My favorite cosmetic product is Cover Girl’s face powder. I would consider trying something new if it was all natural,

    • I actually don’t really use face powder (just bronzer) so I don’t have any of my own recommendations. I believe that Physician’s Formula (which can be bought in drugstores) makes them. I also use a lot of Mineral Fusion products, so you might want to try them out if you are interested.

  12. i love mascara my favorit products

  13. Loved the video and finding your makeup list! Great set!

    • Thanks. I love writing and producing these…it just takes a lot longer than I ever anticipate. I’m sure you are laughing at me right now.

  14. My favorite beauty product is lip butter. It makes my lips so soft and feel so luxurious!

    • Ohhhh…what brand do you use for lip butter? Is it shea or nut butter (so no dairy)? I haven’t found a favorite lip balm/lip butter yet but would love some ideas. Thanks for stopping by.

      • I actually made my own recently and I love it. It has shea butter, some coconut oil & I put a little vanilla oil in it. It’s amazing!

        • Wow. What did you make – moisturizer? Bath scrub? It sounds amazing and must smell delicious. If you have a recipe I would love to recreate it and make a video if you are interested? It’s on my radar to do a few DIY videos, but haven’t gotten to it yet. I did the natural hair conditioner video on YouTube, so it would be something short and sweet like that one. Have a great weekend.

  15. And I would definitely try all natural beauty products!

  16. I don’t have a favorite cosmetic, but I’m always open to trying new products, especially natural ones.

    • Whole Foods and small health food stores sell a ton of good brands like Zuzu, Gabriel Cosmetics and Mineral Fusion. Then there are a few at the drugstore by Neutrogena and Physician’s Formula that are very well priced, but you have to be sure you check out each product because some are better than others. Download the Skin Deep or Think Dirty apps to help while shopping. Have fun.

  17. I like Meaningful Beauty but I’m open to other suggestions. kristiedonelson(at)gmail(dot)com Thank you.

    • If you love natural products and want to sample a bunch to find your favorites, try looking into some of those beauty boxes. I like http://Goodebox.com, but there are others. You get about six nice sized samples and then coupons to buy a larger version if you like it. I wear eye make up the most and now I’m wearing Zuzu liquid eyeliner and Mineral Fusion mascara. Enjoy!

My favorite product right now is Palmer’s BB Cream. I’ll have to check the ingredients to see what’s in it. I admit I’m not vigilant enough and need to do better.

    • Check out EWG’s Skin Deep database because it will analyze the ingredients for you. I used Palmer’s when I was pregnant and loved the cocoa smell. I now use coconut oil, which is a little different but still has a sweet scent. Thanks for stopping by.

  19. Margaret Smith

I love Urban Decay Naked2 eyeshadows!

  20. I love Burt’s Bees lip balm

  21. I like mascara, and would be willing to try a natural product.

    • If you want to try a natural product, check out Mineral Fusion or Jane Iredale. Do you like eyelash curlers? I got one from Georgia Beauty that I really like. It has lavender pads in it.

  22. Diane L.

My favorite is Revlon nail polish. Yes, I would be willing to try another brand!

    • If you like fun, festive colors and want something “green,” check out AILA. I wore a really cool gold color during the holiday season.

  23. Rebecca Graham

I like bare minerals mineral foundation. I would use another product if it was natural.

    • BareMinerals is ranked well on EWG’s Skin Deep database because it is mineral makeup. I’ve been using a liquid Zuzu, but I honestly don’t wear foundation that much.

  24. My favorite is Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. I have a tube in every purse and jacket I own :). I always look for natural products first.

  25. Michelle S

I am opening to using new products, but, I am allergic to “natural” products (not natural products like raw honey, but “naturally made” skincare products).

    • That’s a tough one, since you are allergic, I wouldn’t know what to recommend. My son has nut allergies, so also read the labels to assure there are no almond or other oils in any product. I like using coconut oil and fruits (banana, avocado) for DIY beauty solutions.

  26. I can’t go without mascara. I am up for trying natural make up products.

    • I am the same way. I used to say (when I was a teenager), that if I was stranded on an island and could bring only one product, it would be mascara. I really have found some good “green mascaras.” I’ve tried Jane Iredale, which is pretty good. My favorite still is Mineral Fusion, though.

      • That’s funny! If I was stranded on an island I’d have to pass up the mascara and take Jon Bon Jovi instead!

  27. I love OPI nail polish, it is my fave.

  28. I love good chap stick – Burts Bees is my fave but I honestly haven’t tried many other brands! (yet)

  29. I don’t use many cosmetics so I go for organic. I like the Skin Deep database and check it out when I find a new product.
    Thanks for the contest.

my favorite cosmetic product is eos lip balm. and yes i would consider switching!

    • I love EOS, too. Not only are the lip balms soothing, but they are made with mostly organic ingredients. Plus, the fun colors and shape are easy to find in my purse. Have a great week.

  31. David Fultner

    I like burt’s.

  32. Rachel T

I am obsessed with rollerlash. I just got it in my birchbox… <3

    • That is so exciting. I haven’t tried it. I know that Benefit has some natural products and I will have to look into this. I LOVE mascara, too.

  33. Theresa Smith

My skin is very sensitive. I don’t use cosmetic products. I might be willing to try something natural if it didn’t break me out.

    • My son has very sensitive skin, too. We have to be careful with anything we use. Even a product like California Baby (which is rated well on EWG’s Skin Deep database) isn’t good for him because he has a sensitivity to the natural herbs/plants. I guess like us, it’s probably trial and error for you, too. I really like the natural/organic beauty box subscriptions because you can then sample products without paying a huge fee. You don’t get to choose them, though. It’s something to consider if you want to try a few lines out. Have a great week.

  34. I find it upsetting and scary how many toxins are found in beauty and cleansing products. Living in Italy they restrict a lot of that (of course a lot is still allowed too) – and REALLY scary the same products here (like say Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo) have DIFFERENT chemical makeup then the exact same American product.

    • Isn’t it interesting that they add different ingredients throughout the world both for cosmetics and food. While I do my best to investigate the products I consume/use, I really lean towards using whole foods or items with very few ingredients. That’s why I love Dr. Bronner’s soaps (very few ingredients) and extra virgin organic cold-pressed coconut oil for make up removal, moisturizing, etc. I do love EWG as a resource and use their app all the time. Thanks for stopping by.

  35. I don’t use cosmetics, but sometimes give them as presents, and like natural ingredients

  36. I’d definitely use a cosmetic product if it were made from natural components . I love my Almay Clear Complexion Concealer.

    • If you want to try drugstore brands, look into Physician’s Formula. I haven’t used it but heard good reviews. I use Desert Essence’s concealer. I think I bought it at Whole Foods.

  37. Susan Smith

I use mostly Cover Girl products and I would definitely try all natural beauty products!

    • Check out the Burt’s Bees next time you are at the drugstore especially their lipglosses/colors. They are wholesome and last awhile, too.

  38. laurie murley

I really like Revlon the most, but yes I would like to try something nautural

  39. Amanda Sakovitz

I like Badgal Lash Mascara. I would def consider all natural beauty products.

  42. Stephanie Phelps

I have used cover girl since high school. I would always up for something new!

  43. Laurie Emerson

My favorite cosmetic product is foundation from Too Faced. I like that they are a company which does not test on animals. I would definitely try something different if it was all natural.

I love Burt’s Bees. Hopefully, as clean living becomes more and more popular, these wonderful products will become less expensive and more available to the public.

    • I agree. I like Burt’s Bees especially their avocado conditioner. I hope that as product demand grows, there will be more options thus making them more cost effective. Happy Holidays. Thanks for stopping by.
