The first time I was diagnosed with cancer, we didn’t have smart phones. No one texted. People still wrote letters, though most employees had email. Once people found out that little ol’ 31-year-old me had cancer, they all sent long notes, cards and packages. Rather than answer every call and email, I started writing “chapters” of my cancer experience and emailing them to family/friends. Many people thought I had a sense of humor about it all. So I wrote more. This time around, once all my friends and family heard I was re-diagnosed, I was told I should write a blog. So I did. Now an official year being “live” with PrettyWellness.com, I’m reflecting on what I learned and how to make a difference in this world.

A University of Miami study about the benefits of stress management for breast cancer patients was recently documented in the medical journal, CANCER. The Huffington Post covered this story, featured my experience and hosted a panel to discuss the findings on HuffPostLive.
I’m honored to have taken part in this 30-minute show about cancer and stress management. Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani was an incredible host, thoughtful and informative. The panel included study author, Jamie Stagle from Massachusetts General Hospital, Paige Davis of Soul Sparks Meditation, Life Coach Kellie Frazier and Tiffany Denee Jones of PinkChoseMe.org.
Health & Wellness News & Info Recap 3/23
It’s finally spring. I love this time of year because I crave exercising and physical activity. Now that the days are longer and the weather is warming up, I’m back to walking with my neighbor, jogging the block with my 6-year old and playing family basketball in the driveway. Spring also means baseball season. If you’re a Yankees fan, you will be interested to hear more about the healthy changes in the clubhouse. Also in this week’s Health & Wellness News & Info Recap, a recent study releases information about the importance of moving around and an explanation of toxic chemicals in perfumes.
Green Beauty Drugstore Cosmetics
Do you know how many products you use in a day, from toothpaste and shaving cream to fragrances and hair gels? I used to own a variety of cleansers and makeup and fooled myself thinking I used quality beauty items. I assumed since I often bought cosmetics and hair products from high-end salons that I didn’t have to worry about toxic chemicals.
I was wrong.
Like many, I believed if a product was for sale at a drugstore, supermarket or boutique cosmetics counter, it must be safe. And even worse, I didn’t understand that every product I put on my body soaked into my skin and was absorbed into my bloodstream within minutes. I’ve read that women use between 10-20 cosmetic items daily. This is equal to absorbing about five pounds of makeup per year that includes carcinogens, pesticides and hormone disrupters.
